Even if you screw up on some files and don't want to restore the whole catalog from backup, reading metadata from individual files is "nice to have". I went into programs and still had my old version of LR3 installed. I'm wondering the same thing, do you save all previews? You can not post a blank message.

I had this happen to me (my external HD burned out) but at least I still had the photos on DVD's. I flash-drived the resulting catalog to my laptop. I've only closed it twice and both times I was unable to re-open due to the issues I've mentioned.
