So I'm posting in support sites at both places. According to Microsoft, the behavior may occur if files in the Office identities folder are locked. Try updating first and see if that solves the problem.

The folder you need to backup is your Microsoft User Data folder located in Documents. I have an older iMac so probably won't upgrade anything further until I replace my Mac.... There's way too suggestions out there and just need a fix. The affected Office program should now start properly.

Using "Remove Office" does not delete your Microsoft User Data folder that contains your email messages.
