On Mac, Linux and Windows 10, serial communication is always done with the drivers that come with the OS. My USB was detected straight away.

Unplug all USB devices from PC, turn power off, and wait a minute or two. The problem is likely in the gid= mount option, which is not filesystem independent (see mount(8)).
